  CONSULTING SERVICES

Ashby Solutions™ specializes in hardware and software design consulting, with a focus on embedded processor designs.  We have a unique perspective on the design world, as the founder, Bruce Wahler, is both a seasoned product designer and a life-long performing musician -- a combination of artistic and technical pursuits not often seen in the technical world.  Ashby Solutions creates superbly functional designs that blend esthetically and ergonomically, too.  No matter what you want to do with product design and audio, we can help turn your ideas into reality:

  • Hardware Design
  • Prototyping
  • PC Board Layout
  • Process Documentation
  • Turnkey Development
  • Firmware Design
  • Test Software

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Great ideas alone cannot guarantee great products. It takes hard work, bright people, a clear vision, and sometimes, a little luck.  It also takes experience and guidance to quickly determine which approaches will result in reliable, manufacturable products -- and which ones are dead ends. A large development budget or a fresh round of financing can disappear quickly when following a flawed approach, with little to show for your effort.

Ashby Solutions can help by providing the experience gained from over 30 years in the electronics industry, working in the disciplines of digital, analog, and firmware design.  We have been involved in many cutting-edge products in the computer, building automation, medical products, and business equipment arenas.  Our experience can help steer you to a clear course.

In addition to knowledge, we provide first-rate documentation of all our work.  We can also provide tools and services that many smaller businesses (and some larger ones) lack.  Ashby Solutions owns and uses the following development and distribution tools:

Adobe Acrobat ®    portable finished documents for distribution
Altium ® Designer, OrCAD ® Capture, Protel 99SE   schematic capture, PCB layout, FPGA design, circuit simulation
Cakewalk SONAR™   multimedia support, .MP3 and Real Audio sound files for distribution
CCS PIC C Compiler, Microchip MPLAB™ Development System   PIC microcontroller code development, simulation, and programming
CodeVisionAVR C Compiler, Equinox Meridian™ Programmer   Atmel (AVR/ATMega) microcontroller code development, simulation, and programming
Corel Paint Shop PhotoPro™ with Animation Shop™   publishing-quality graphics and .GIF animations
IAR MSP430 C Compiler, TI MSP430 Emulator   TI MSP430 microcontroller code development, simulation, and programming
Microsoft ® C++ and J++   application, website ,and .DLL/driver development
Microsoft ® Office   presentations, specification development, bills of material, white papers, test reports
Upperspace Design CAD™ Pro 3000   2D and 3D mechanical drawings

FOLLOW-ON PROGRAMS

Many successful companies start with a single great idea.  For the first year or two, everyone is focused on that one effort.  The only problem is, your competition isn't standing still waiting for you to succeed.  Who's working on the next generation of products?  In many cases -- no one.

Ashby Solutions can help by providing the front-end investigation of promising technologies to find the one that best suits your company's long-term goals.  Once the basic "skeleton" of the program is defined, you can choose to have us continue with the development work, or port the task to your in-house design team.

STRUCTURE AND GUIDANCE

One common -- and not necessarily flattering -- thread among young technology companies (especially startups) is an aversion to the processes and paperwork necessary to turn a great idea into a well engineered, profitable product.  The very environment that breeds quick innovation -- minimal structure, "soft" rules, informal processes -- also encourages poor documentation, excess spending, and unclear goals, often causing programs to fail.

Does this sound familiar?  If you need someone to figure out how to do something, everyone's willing to pitch in.  The more challenging the assignment, the better chance you have of recruiting help.  When it comes time to document what you learned, however, the room empties in a hurry.  For etter or worse, the real output of any product development group includes paperwork:  specifications, manufacturing process documentation, support guides, and operational 'white papers.'  Any decent designer can make something once; how do you make the same product thousands of times over and over?

We can help in two ways:

  • If your developers are too busy to produce the documentation in a timely fashion, we can step in to develop it for you.  Our electronic and paper output is clear, concise, and easy to understand.  We have a track record of taking on projects with little background information, yet quickly producing complete, accurate details for archiving.

  • If you recognize a continual problem with incomplete, confusing documentation in your group, we can work directly with your own engineers and designers to improve their output and processes.  In this way, you gain resources for future programs, while still producing the necessary documentation on time.

Due to the proprietary nature of many of our client's designs, we cannot publicly display their products on the website.  However, we'd be happy to discuss the type of work we've done in general terms, or to provide samples of the work.  Send an email to info@ashbysolutions.com or call 978.386.7389.
